A pithi ceremony is a joyful, playful and fun occasion in which family members and friends bless the couple with well wishes. They rub the pithi paste onto the bride and/or groom’s arms, neck, face, hands and legs. Believed to be an excellent cleanser of one's soul and for providing skin glow, soft skin and shine, a pithi paste is made out of chickpea flour, turmeric, sandalwood powder, herbs, aromatic oils, rose water, among other ingredients.
But wait. There's more.
In their tradition, rubbing and applying of the paste is something so basic, according to Alykhan. Because through the years, it just got nastier and nastier. To the extent of throwing spoiled eggs and cracking raw ones on top of their heads, jam, breadcrumbs, ketchup, mayonnaise, honey, gooey juice, at the groom. Anything sticky. And it gets worse every time a pithi happens. Talk about slimy!
All photos taken during Alykhan's pithi ceremony. He looked so normal prior, and ended up looking more like a monster that came out of a swamp! Hahaha! Traditions can be very extreme and interesting, and I definitely don't want to be in Alykhan's position that very moment! Lol
1st photo: Alykhan with Mom and Dad. 2nd photo: Alykhan with Jahan. Next: Collage of some detail. 3rd photo: Alykhan nervously laughing. 4th photo: As part of the Ismaili tradition, four men, preferably the bride’s uncles (mother’s brothers) bring pineapples or sugarcane and place them in the four corners of the room. This is meant as a symbol of protection from evil. 5th photo: Alykhan's Mom definitely knows something messy is about to happen. :) 6th photo: The cousin holding a container on top of her head. She's not allowed to talk, look to her left or right, not even allowed to smile.
Alykhan in his hotel room for his outfit change. Posing ala-ANTM. Lol
You ready? Hahaha!
I kept hearing Alykhan say "this is your last chance to do this to me, if ever I did something wrong to you, it's your time to get back" Lol
Now you've got a new profile photo. *Peace*
I love Mom's reaction here. She's just sooo happy to see Alykhan in this state. Lol
Alykhan's family with Jahan. Too bad I can't come with you to Vancouver for your wedding. I'll see you when you come back! :)
